Aussie Coach Hints at 'Tough Decisions' Regarding Cummins and Starc Playing in IPL

Australia faces an extremely busy schedule over the next year, featuring several crucial Test series. Head coach Andrew McDonald has hinted that "tough decisions" may have to be made regarding the participation of the team's Test players in next year's IPL due to this crowded international fixture list.

Over the next 12 months, Australia is scheduled to play 20 Tests and 14 white-ball matches. That journey begins this Thursday with the Darwin Test against Bangladesh, followed by another match against Shanto and Litton's side in Mackay.

Additionally, over the coming year, Australia will play six ODIs against Zimbabwe and South Africa, three Tests against South Africa, eight white-ball matches at home against England, four home Tests against New Zealand, and a five-match Test series in India. Next March, they will play a special commemorative Test against England to mark the 150th anniversary of Test cricket. That will be followed by five Ashes Tests in England in June-July, with a potential World Test Championship final also in the mix.

Following that, towards the end of August next year, Australia is scheduled to host New Zealand for a white-ball series, which is being viewed as preparation for the ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November.

Five key players from Australia's current first-choice Test and ODI side—Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and Travis Head—hold contracts across various IPL franchises, though that list could shift following player retentions and auctions for the upcoming season. Wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis, a staple in the ODI setup and Test backup, is also part of the Lucknow Super Giants squad.

McDonald views IPL participation as a positive for players, but he signaled that significant decisions lie ahead given the national team's grueling itinerary:

“I know people will start talking about the IPL and how that window is utilized. As I've said before, the IPL is an important part of the management plan for many of our players. There are clear performance benefits to having our top players compete in what I consider the best T20 competition in the world. However, a balance must be struck across everything.”

During the last IPL, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Sunrisers Hyderabad expressed frustration after Starc, Hazlewood, and Cummins joined their respective squads late, creating friction between cricket boards in India and Australia. Australia subsequently rested the trio for several white-ball series following the IPL, which also sparked debate and criticism.

The 2027 IPL is expected to run from mid-March to late May, followed potentially by the World Test Championship final in June. Amidst the packed international calendar, the IPL window offers Australia their only realistic window to rest key players. Meanwhile, the IPL has introduced a two-year ban for overseas players who withdraw after being picked at the auction for reasons other than injury.

All factors combined point to a complex period ahead for several Australian cricketers. However, McDonald remains confident that his players will make the right choices, as they have done in the past:

“I know many raise the debate of country versus franchise. But the most vital factor right now is giving our fast bowlers' bodies the chance to rest and recover so they can prepare fully and perform at their best across the 20 or 21 matches everyone is talking about.

What I can say about our players is that they make sound decisions throughout the process. Those decisions are backed by thorough discussions with medical staff and coaches. They want to play for Australia. Right after [the IPL] comes the Ashes, hopefully the World Test Championship final, and then the World Cup. There is a lot of critical cricket for Australia during that block, so we will simply have to make some decisions.”
