After announcing his retirement from international cricket, Tamim Iqbal has received emotional messages from his national team teammates.
Since his international debut in 2007, Tamim Iqbal has shared a long cricketing journey with Mushfiqur Rahim. The bond between them began in age-group cricket and grew stronger over the years as they played together for Bangladesh. Despite the heartbreak of Tamim’s departure, Mushfiq wished him all the best for the future.
Tamim’s international career had been stagnant since the 2023 World Cup, and despite the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s attempts to bring him back, he decided not to return. On Friday, he made the announcement of his retirement via social media.
On his farewell, Tamim received heartfelt messages from long-time teammates and former cricketers, with Mushfiq sharing his admiration on social media.
“I just want to say how proud I am of every achievement you’ve had, my friend. You’ve been an incredible ambassador for Bangladesh cricket and a world-class batsman.”
Over a 15-year career, Tamim played 387 matches for Bangladesh, with Mushfiq as his teammate in 345 of them. They formed a partnership in 72 innings, amassing over 2,500 runs with five century partnerships and 13 half-century stands.
For Mushfiq, the most memorable moment was during the 2018 Asia Cup against Sri Lanka when Tamim, despite suffering a finger injury early in the match, came back to bat with a bandaged hand and helped form a crucial 32-run stand for the 10th wicket.
“I will always remember our partnership in Dubai, especially when you batted with a broken finger. It was a testament to your dedication to the country and your love for the game.”
Mushfiq wished Tamim all the best for his retirement and expressed his gratitude for the friendship formed through cricket.
“Best wishes for your retirement, my friend. I’ll miss you on the field, but I’m grateful for the wonderful friend I’ve gained through cricket.”
Another experienced cricketer from the national team, Mahmudullah, congratulated Tamim on his successful career.
“Congratulations on your long and outstanding career, Tamim. You’ve achieved so much and contributed immensely to Bangladesh cricket.”
Mahmudullah shared a picture from their last batting partnership together.
“I think that was the last time we batted together for Bangladesh. Playing with you, both on and off the field, has been a joyful experience. Wishing you the best for your retirement and future life.”
“Your legacy will always be remembered.”
In 2007, Tamim made his debut against Zimbabwe, with Shahriar Nafees as his opening partner. Nafees also posted a video from the 2007 World Cup, where Tamim hit a memorable six against India.
He also shared a brief message of congratulations for Tamim: “Bangladesh will always remember your contribution to international cricket… Tamim Iqbal.”
Soumya Sarkar, who was Tamim’s opening partner for much of his career, also reminisced about their time playing together.
“Best wishes for your new journey and for memories that will last a lifetime. Retirement isn’t an end; it’s just the beginning of a new chapter. Enjoy the time ahead, brother. I’ll miss you on the field.”
Former opener and current selector, Hannan Sarkar, also expressed gratitude for Tamim’s contributions to the national team.
“Bangladesh cricket will always remember your great contributions. Thank you, Tamim Iqbal Khan.”
