Before stepping onto the field for the World Cup, the Bangladesh Under-19 women’s team is in excellent form. Just last December, the team reached the final of the Asia Cup. Following that, they defeated Sri Lanka in a T20 World Cup warm-up match.
In their second warm-up game today, under the leadership of Sumaiya Akter, Bangladesh secured a thrilling victory over the runners-up of the last World Cup, England. This win marks Bangladesh’s first-ever victory against England in women’s cricket at any level.
The match, held in Kuala Lumpur, went down to the wire, ending in a Super Over where Bangladesh triumphed by 2 runs. England batted first after winning the toss and scored 113 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs. Chasing the target, Bangladesh needed just 1 run off the final ball, with one wicket in hand. However, Nishita Akter was run out on the last delivery, sending the match to a Super Over.
Previously, the Bangladesh women’s senior team had never defeated England, nor had the Under-19 team played against them before.
In the Super Over, left-arm spinner Courteney Coleman bowled for England, and Bangladesh scored 11 runs, thanks to Sadia Akter’s unbeaten 8 off 3 balls. Sadia hit a six off the fourth delivery, playing a pivotal role.
For Bangladesh, pacer Habiba Akter bowled the Super Over brilliantly. England needed 4 runs off the final delivery, but Prisha Tanawala managed only 2 runs. Earlier in the main match, Sadia had also contributed with a crucial 20 runs off 17 balls, while Anisa Akter claimed 3 wickets.
The Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, featuring 16 teams, will begin on January 18, with the final scheduled for February 2. Bangladesh has been placed in Group D alongside Australia, Scotland, and Nepal.
