The ICC announced the winner of the 2024 Men’s T20 Player of the Year on Saturday. Arshdeep triumphed over Australia’s Travis Head, Pakistan’s Babar Azam, and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza to claim the title.
Last year, Arshdeep played 18 T20 matches for India, taking 36 wickets at an average of 13.5 and an economy rate of 7.49. This made him the second-highest wicket-taker in a calendar year for India in T20s. In 2022, Bhuvneshwar Kumar claimed 37 wickets from 32 matches, and Arshdeep finished third with 33 wickets.
Arshdeep established himself as a world-class bowler not only with the new ball but also in death overs. He took three wickets in a match six times and even had a four-wicket haul once.
In the 2024 T20 World Cup, his career-best bowling performance came against the USA, where he claimed 4 wickets for just 9 runs. He also impressed in the final against South Africa, taking 2 wickets for 20 runs, including an impressive 19th over where he gave just 4 runs, putting the opposition under pressure. India won the final by 7 runs, with South Africa unable to chase down the 16-run target in the final over.
Arshdeep played all of India’s matches in the World Cup held in the USA and the West Indies. He took 17 wickets in 8 matches at an average of 12.64, the joint highest in the tournament, alongside Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi.
The winners were selected through votes from media representatives, the ICC Voting Academy, and the supporters.
