The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selectors announced the squad for the Champions Trophy, but Wasim Akram called it an “unexpected team,” while former captain Rashid Latif labeled it a “political selection.” Following the criticism, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi stated that the squad is under review.

However, Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan insisted that the best possible team has been selected and denied any discussions about changes. The contrasting statements from the board chief and captain come at a time when there is less than a week left to finalize the squad.

The main controversy revolves around the inclusion of Khushdil Shah and Faheem Ashraf. Neither has played for Pakistan since 2023, with Khushdil last appearing in an ODI in 2022. Before the squad announcement, both were playing in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Many, including Akram and Latif, believe these two players do not deserve a place in the ODI squad. Addressing the issue at an event in Lahore, PCB chairman Naqvi said, “The selection committee has the right to review the squad and decide on changes. Khushdil Shah and Faheem Ashraf were included with good intentions.”

Despite the ongoing debate, Rizwan sees no need for changes. Speaking to reporters in Lahore, he said, “There has been no discussion about squad changes. The best team has been selected for the tournament.”

Rizwan also backed the form of Khushdil and Ashraf but admitted that missing Saim Ayub, who was ruled out due to injury, could affect the team’s balance. “Not having Saim Ayub will hurt our combination,” he added.

The Champions Trophy kicks off on February 19 with Pakistan facing New Zealand in Lahore. Teams have until February 12 to make changes to their squads, after which any replacements will require approval from the tournament’s technical committee. Pakistan is in Group A alongside New Zealand, Bangladesh, and India, while Group B features Australia, England, Afghanistan, and South Africa.
