Australian cricketer Beth Mooney has been named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for January.
West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican, who was the standout performer in the Test series against Pakistan, has added another accolade to his name. For the first time in his career, he has been crowned the ICC Men’s Player of the Month. Meanwhile, Australia’s Beth Mooney won the women’s award.
The ICC announced the best male and female cricketers of the month on Tuesday.
Warrican edged out India’s Varun Chakravarthy and Pakistan’s Nauman Ali to claim the honor, while Mooney outperformed West Indies’ Karishma Ramharack and India’s Gongadi Trisha.
Warrican’s remarkable performance came during the two-match Test series in Pakistan. In the first Test in Multan, he thrived on a spin-friendly pitch, taking three wickets in the first innings and an incredible seven for just 32 runs in the second. Despite his efforts, the West Indies lost the match.
Before the Pakistan series, Warrican had taken 54 wickets in his 17-match Test career but had never claimed a five-wicket haul, let alone ten wickets in a match. He achieved both milestones in the first Test.
West Indies bounced back in the second Test with a memorable 120-run victory, securing their first Test win in Pakistan in over 34 years. Once again, Warrican was the hero, taking four wickets for 43 runs in the first innings and five for 27 in the second. His outstanding performance earned him both the Player of the Match and Player of the Series awards.
Warrican finished the series as the leading wicket-taker with 19 wickets in two matches. Additionally, he made valuable contributions with the bat, scoring unbeaten knocks of 31 and 36.
On the women’s side, Australian wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney won the award thanks to her stellar performances against England. She scored a half-century in the Ashes ODI series before dominating in the three-match T20I series, where she amassed 213 runs at an impressive strike rate of 146.89.
Mooney played a blistering 75 off 44 balls in Sydney, followed by an unbeaten 94 off 63 deliveries in Adelaide. Her performances propelled her to the top of the T20I batting rankings.
