India Dominates England in Another One-Sided Victory
Shubman Gill shone once again with the bat, following up his fifties from the first two matches with a brilliant century. Along with contributions from others, India posted a total surpassing 350 runs. England never stood a chance, and in another one-sided contest, India sealed a whitewash victory in the ODI series under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
In the third ODI at Ahmedabad on Wednesday, India won by 142 runs. Chasing a target of 357, England was bowled out for just 214 in 34.2 overs.
This is India’s second-largest win against England in terms of runs, after their 158-run victory in Rajkot in 2008.
The hero of the match was Gill. After scores of 87 and 60 in the first two games, he played an outstanding knock of 112 off 102 balls, with 14 fours and 3 sixes. The 25-year-old batsman earned the title of Player of the Match and finished the series with 259 runs, making him the Player of the Series.
After a return from injury, Virat Kohli contributed a solid 52 off 55 balls, including 7 fours and a six. Shreyas Iyer also chipped in with 78 off 64 balls, featuring 8 fours and 2 sixes.
England had a promising start, amassing 123 runs in 17 overs with just two wickets down. However, they lost regular wickets and were bundled out for 214, well short of the target.
India’s bowlers were led by Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Axar Patel, and Hardik Pandya, each taking two wickets.
India had already comfortably won the first two matches chasing runs, and this time, even after batting first, they easily crushed England.
After a 4-1 loss in the T20 series, England now faces a 3-0 defeat in the ODI series, a worrying sign ahead of the Champions Trophy.
Despite losing the toss for the 10th consecutive time in ODIs, India got off to a solid start, with Gill leading the charge. He put together two big partnerships, the first with Kohli (116 runs) and then with Shreyas (104 runs). Gill completed his seventh ODI century off 95 balls, becoming the fifth player to score centuries in all three formats at a single venue.
Gill’s brilliant knock was halted by Rashid, but not before he had set the foundation for India’s big total. Shreyas was also dismissed by Rashid after a quick-fire 50 off 43 balls.
Despite a few late wickets, India crossed the 350 mark, with Lokesh Rahul contributing a cameo of 40 off 29 balls.
England’s chase started brightly, with 60 runs off the first 6 overs. But after two quick wickets, they struggled to build partnerships. Tom Banton (38), Joe Root (24), and Harry Brook (19) failed to convert starts. Captain Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone were dismissed cheaply, and only a late cameo from Gus Atkinson (38 off 19 balls) helped England cross 200.
