Pace bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse is suffering from a toe injury.
The concerns surrounding Carse have unfortunately come true. The pacer has been ruled out of the remaining part of the Champions Trophy. England has called up leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed as his replacement.
The 20-year-old Rehan was officially added to the England squad after receiving approval from the tournament’s technical committee on Monday.
Carse’s toe injury began during England’s tour of India just before the Champions Trophy, which kept him out of the last two games of the three-match ODI series. He didn’t seem fully fit during the first match of the Champions Trophy against Australia either. He was the most expensive bowler in that losing match.
After aggravating the injury in that match, Carse did not take part in practice with the team on Monday and has now been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament.
Rehan, who has taken 10 wickets in 6 ODIs so far, joins the squad as Carse’s replacement. He was part of the squad for the India tour but didn’t play any matches. This will be his first time participating in a global tournament.
England will play Afghanistan in a must-win match on Wednesday. Their final group-stage match will be against South Africa on March 1.
