In this season’s IPL, both teams were chasing their first victory. Gujarat Titans finally tasted success by defeating Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad. Shubman Gill’s team secured a convincing 36-run win over Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai.
Batting first, Gujarat Titans posted a strong total of 196 runs for 8 wickets in 20 overs. In response, Mumbai Indians could only manage 160 runs for 6 wickets, falling short by 36 runs.
During Mumbai’s chase, Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav put up some resistance. However, the start was rocky as captain Rohit Sharma (8) fell in the very first over after hitting two consecutive boundaries. Mohammed Siraj got his revenge by bowling him out on the fourth ball.
Tilak Varma came in and started aggressively, adding 27 runs for the second wicket with Ryan Rickelton, with 18 runs coming off Tilak’s bat. Siraj struck again by bowling out Rickelton, but Tilak built another partnership of 62 runs off 42 balls with Suryakumar Yadav. Despite the stand, Tilak remained relatively quiet, scoring 21 runs off 22 balls.
In the 12th over, Tilak Varma (39 off 36) was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna, and in the following over, left-arm spinner Sai Kishore sent Robin Minz back, dealing a double blow to Mumbai. After the departure of Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 28) and Hardik Pandya (11 off 17), Mumbai Indians — five-time IPL champions — completely lost their grip on the match.
Earlier, Gujarat Titans started with an aggressive approach. Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill put up a 78-run stand in just 8.3 overs. Captain Gill scored 38 runs off 27 balls, reaching the 1,000-run milestone at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. He achieved this landmark in just 20 innings, making him the second-fastest player to score 1,000 runs at a single IPL venue. Chris Gayle remains the fastest, reaching the feat in 19 innings at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore.
After Gill’s dismissal, Sai Sudharsan built a 51-run partnership with Jos Buttler for the second wicket. Of those, Buttler contributed 38 runs off 24 balls before getting caught by wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 13.5th over, leaving Gujarat at 129/2.
Sudharsan top-scored with 63 runs off 41 balls, departing as the fourth batsman at the end of the 18th over, with the team score at 179 runs. Gujarat lost two more wickets in the next over but managed to add 17 runs in the last two overs, finishing at 196/8.
In the end, Gujarat Titans’ solid batting display and disciplined bowling were too much for Mumbai Indians to handle, handing the Titans their first victory of the season.
