Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has received a death threat via email, with the sender also demanding ₹1 crore. Shami’s brother, Haseeb Ahmed, confirmed the threat, saying, “Shami received this threat through an email,” as first reported.
This incident comes shortly after India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir also received similar death threats.
According to The Times of India, Haseeb Ahmed has filed a formal complaint with the Amroha police in Uttar Pradesh regarding the matter. Since Shami is currently busy with the IPL, Haseeb checked his email last Sunday to see if there were any important messages. That’s when he came across the email containing the death threat.
The FIR (First Information Report) states that the email also mentioned someone named Prabhakar. The threat was allegedly sent from an account named “Rajput Sindar.” Haseeb submitted a printed copy of the email to the police when filing the complaint.
Amroha Superintendent of Police, Amit Kumar Anand, confirmed that they have already taken necessary action upon receiving the complaint.
Shami is currently playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in this year’s IPL. However, he hasn’t had much impact in the tournament so far — managing only 6 wickets in 9 matches while conceding runs at an economy rate of 11.23.
Last month, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir also received death threats through two emails following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir. However, unlike Shami’s case, there was no ransom demand. The complaint on Gambhir’s behalf was lodged with Delhi Police by his secretary.
