With a full-term captaincy now in hand, Liton Kumar Das is setting long-term goals—he wants to gift the nation something special at the T20 World Cup.
Liton’s leadership tenure runs through to the next T20 World Cup, and his focus is firmly set on that tournament. Bangladesh has yet to make a real impact on the global T20 stage. But the newly appointed T20 captain hopes his team can regroup and deliver something memorable.
After Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down from the role, the BCB appointed Liton based on his experience to lead the side through to next year’s World Cup. He has led the national team in various formats since 2021 and recently guided Bangladesh to a T20 series win. Though he has captained across all formats, this is the first time he’s been given a long-term opportunity.
Now that he’s officially in charge for an extended period, Liton has the space to think strategically. Speaking at his first press conference as full-time T20 captain, he shared his ambitions for the World Cup.
“Obviously, this (long-term captaincy) is a positive thing. When you’re given a longer stretch, you get the chance to think about a lot more.”
“What matters now is how well I can organize the team during this time. I’m very optimistic about this—having a long-term plan in mind. With the players I have, I believe we can deliver something good at the World Cup.”
Previously, Liton has served as a stand-in captain in 1 Test, 7 ODIs, and 4 T20Is, with a total of 7 wins under his leadership across formats.
Now at 30, with full-time responsibility, Liton senses a clear difference from before.
“If I talk about the difference—earlier, the planning was always series-based. But now that I’ve been given a longer-term opportunity, I’ll be thinking ahead in every aspect. I’ll know there’s a goal to work toward. Of course, there’ll still be series-to-series planning, but I’ll also focus on what more we can achieve going forward.”
