Shakib Al Hasan hasn’t played any recognized cricket since November last year. With uncertainty looming over his cricketing future, he stepped away from the spotlight. But after six months, the star all-rounder is set to return to the field.
Today, Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars announced on social media that Shakib will join their squad for the remainder of the tournament. He is scheduled to link up with the team in Islamabad on May 17. Lahore has a match the very next day. The franchise confirmed that Shakib has been signed as a replacement for the injured Daryl Mitchell, who sustained a hand injury.
Lahore Qalandars also included Shakib’s statement in their official press release to Pakistani media. The former Bangladesh captain said, “I’m really happy to be part of the PSL this season. We’re at a crucial stage of the tournament where every match matters. PSL is a league I enjoy watching, and now I’m excited to get out there and play. Qalandars have a fantastic fan base and strong team spirit. I’m thrilled to be part of a team that’s aiming for great results.”
According to BCB sources, Shakib applied for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) last night to participate in the PSL. While the NOC hasn’t been formally granted yet, the board has agreed in principle to approve it.
Lahore Qalandars’ team director, Sameen Rana, expressed his excitement over Shakib’s inclusion. In a statement, he said, “I’m thrilled to welcome Shakib to the Qalandars family. His experience, skill, and all-round abilities will be a valuable addition—especially at this crucial stage of the tournament. His presence will add depth to our squad, and I’m confident he will make a strong impact both on and off the field.”
This season, Lahore sits fourth on the points table with 9 points from 9 matches. They have only one game left in the league stage, and a top-four finish will see them qualify for the playoffs.
Shakib brings a wealth of experience in T20 cricket. Across all T20 formats, he has played 444 matches, scored 7,438 runs, and taken 492 wickets. He has previously featured in the PSL for Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings and has been part of nearly every major franchise league, including the IPL.
Shakib’s last competitive match was on November 30 last year, playing for Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League.
