The eighth edition of the Asia Cup took place in Sri Lanka between 16 July and 1 August 2004. This tournament featured six teams, marking the first time that leading Asian associate nations, the UAE and Hong Kong, joined the four full test-playing Asian nations. The format included both round-robin stages and a knockout phase, resulting in a total of 13 matches played throughout the event.
Sri Lanka secured the title by defeating India in the final, claiming their third Asia Cup victory. After winning the toss in the final match, the host nation chose to bat first. This edition of the competition also served as the international stage for Lasith Malinga, who made his ODI debut during a Group B fixture.
Individual performances shaped the statistical landscape of the tournament. Shoaib Malik finished as the highest run-scorer with 316 runs. On the bowling side, Irfan Pathan led the charts by taking 14 wickets. Sanath Jayasuriya earned the player of the series award for his contributions to the tournament.
