The 1928 County Championship represented the 39th edition of the first-class cricket competition held in England. Teams competed in a league system to determine the top side in the country. This season marked a significant achievement for Lancashire as they secured their 5th title in the tournament history.
The competition relied on a specific points system to manage the league table. A win earned a team eight points, while a tie was worth four. Drawn matches featured a more complex arrangement based on first-innings performances. The team leading after the first innings of a draw received five points, while the side trailing gained three. If the scores remained level after the first innings of a draw, both teams took home four points.
Matches resulting in no first-innings lead after at least six hours of play also awarded four points to each side. Games curtailed by weather to less than six hours without a first-innings result were declared void, removing them from the points tally entirely.
