Ranji Trophy 1937–38

The 1937–38 Ranji Trophy marked the fourth edition of India's premier first-class cricket tournament. Eighteen teams entered the competition, which ran from 17 October 1937 to 24 February 1938. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India organized teams into four geographical zones, the tournament itself operated under a knockout format.

Hyderabad secured their first title in unusual fashion. They reached the final after receiving walkovers in both the quarter-final and semi-final stages because their opponents failed to appear. Consequently, the final match against defending champions Nawanagar served as the only game Hyderabad played throughout the entire season.

Nawanagar reached the final after dominating their path, securing three consecutive innings victories against Baroda, Sind, and Bombay. In the final, Nawanagar elected to bat first. However, Hyderabad successfully chased the target, with Edulji Aibara scoring 137 runs. This effort helped Hyderabad record a total of 310, which stood as the highest fourth-innings score to win a Ranji final for nearly eight decades.

Despite Nawanagar losing the final, Amar Singh produced an outstanding individual performance across the season. He led all players in both runs and wickets, accumulating 370 runs and taking 24 wickets over four matches. His impact was particularly visible during the West Zone matches, where he recorded significant scores and bowling hauls, including taking 6/22 in an innings against Bombay.
