The 1943–44 Ranji Trophy marked the tenth edition of the first-class tournament in India. Nineteen teams participated in the knockout competition, which resulted in Western India claiming their first and only championship title. Herbert Barritt captained the winning side, becoming the third Englishman to lead a team to victory in this competition.
The final match pitted Western India against Bengal. Bengal won the toss and chose to bat on a neutral ground. The Cricket Club of India president, Sir Homi Mody, presented the trophy to the victors at the conclusion of the event.
Individual performances defined the season. Vijay Merchant of Bombay topped the run charts with 553 runs, achieving a season batting average of 276.50, the highest ever for a batsman scoring over 500 runs. During a match against Maharashtra, Merchant also scored an unbeaten 359, which stood as the highest individual score in India at the time. Bombay set a national record in that same match by posting 735 runs, while Merchant and Rusi Modi combined for a 371-run partnership for the sixth wicket.
Eighteen matches occurred across the tournament. Saeed Ahmed proved to be the most effective bowler of the season, taking 28 wickets for Western India.
