The 1954–55 Ranji Trophy marked the 21st season of the first-class competition. Twenty teams entered the knockout tournament to compete for the title. Matches took place across India as the format demanded consistent performance in a high-stakes environment.
Madras claimed their first title during this season. They overcame Holkar in the final to secure the trophy. Holkar won the toss in that final match and elected to field, but they could not stop the momentum of the Madras side.
Two players from Madras dominated the individual statistical charts throughout the campaign. A. G. Kripal Singh finished as the leading run-scorer with 636 runs. Meanwhile, M. K. Murugesh led the bowling efforts for the champions, taking 23 wickets.
