Ranji Trophy 1955–56

The 1955–56 Ranji Trophy marked the 22nd edition of the national first-class championship in India. A total of 22 teams participated in the tournament, competing under a standard knockout format to decide the eventual winner.

Bombay claimed the title, securing their 8th championship trophy after defeating Bengal in the final match. The victory continued their dominance in the competition during this era.

Individual performances stood out throughout the season. Polly Umrigar of Bombay finished as the leading run-scorer with 595 runs, while Premangsu Chatterjee from Bengal topped the wicket-taking charts with 26 dismissals.

A curious moment occurred in the North Zone qualifiers. A match ended in a tie, and the team that advanced to the next stage was determined by the spin of a coin.
