Ranji Trophy 1957–58

The 1957–58 Ranji Trophy marked the 24th season of the first-class competition. This edition featured 22 teams, including debutants Vidarbha. For the first time in the tournament, the Zonal matches used a round-robin format to determine progression.

Baroda claimed their fourth title by defeating Services in the final. During that final match, Vijay Hazare surpassed 6,000 runs in his first-class career after Baroda won the toss and elected to bat. The road to the final included a notable moment in the West Zone, where Bombay conceded its match against Baroda once the latter secured their qualification.

Individual performances defined the season across the country. Polly Umrigar of Bombay finished as the leading run-scorer with 594 runs. In the bowling department, Hyderabad’s Ghulam Ahmed and Madras’ V.V. Kumar shared the top spot, each taking 28 wickets.

Delhi player Prakash Bhandari delivered a standout effort against Patiala, scoring 227 runs while also claiming 4/34 and 5/47 with the ball. The points system in the East Zone awarded 8 points for a win, 5 for a draw with a first-innings lead, 3 for a draw without one, and 0 for a loss, with a 1-point bonus available.
