The 1961–62 Ranji Trophy marked the 28th edition of the first-class competition in India. A total of 23 teams participated in the tournament, which followed a knockout format to determine the winner.
Bombay claimed the title by defeating Rajasthan in the final. This victory served as the 13th championship win for the side. In that final match, Bombay won the toss and chose to bat first.
Individual performances shaped the season as well. P. Sitaram from Delhi topped the bowling charts by claiming 40 wickets. Meanwhile, Harcharan Singh of Southern Punjab finished as the leading run-scorer with a total of 495 runs.
The semifinals included a notable display of aggressive batting. Prakash Bhandari scored a hundred in just 60 minutes against Rajasthan, setting a record at the time for the fastest century in the history of the Ranji Trophy.
