The 1972–73 Ranji Trophy marked the 39th edition of India's premier first-class cricket competition. A total of 24 teams competed in the tournament, which followed a structure of league stages leading into a knockout phase.
Bombay claimed the title once again, securing their 24th championship overall. This victory represented their 15th successive win, a record for national championships among Test-playing nations. Ajit Wadekar captained the squad to this victory, marking his fourth title as captain and putting him in rare company alongside C. K. Nayudu.
The final against Tamil Nadu took place at Chepauk. Bombay won the toss and chose to bat first. The game saw frantic scoring and falling wickets, with 27 dismissals occurring on the second day alone. The match concluded on the first ball of the third day.
Individual performances defined the season across the various regions. Chetan Chauhan of Maharashtra finished as the highest run-scorer with 873 runs. Meanwhile, S. Venkataraghavan of Tamil Nadu led the bowling charts by taking 58 wickets throughout the competition.
