Ranji Trophy 1982–83

The 1982-83 Ranji Trophy marked the 49th edition of the first-class competition in India. Twenty-four teams competed across a format that included both league and knockout stages to determine the domestic champion. Karnataka emerged as the winners, claiming their third title by defeating Bombay based on a first innings lead in the final.

Karnataka set the tone in the championship match by winning the toss and choosing to field. Their batting performance proved decisive as they reached a total of 535 all out, bolstered by 16 penalty runs. Roger Binny provided a standout individual performance in the final, contributing 115 runs and 45 runs across his two innings.

Binny was a vital force throughout the knockout stages. During the semifinal against Haryana, he claimed 8 wickets for 22 runs while also hitting 54, which stood as the highest score of that match. Karnataka teammate Raghuram Bhat led the tournament in total wickets taken, finishing the season with 42 scalps to his name.

Individual batting efforts defined much of the season beyond the final. Baroda's Anshuman Gaekwad topped the run-scoring charts with 731 runs. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu debutant C.S. Suresh Kumar made an immediate impact by scoring 146 and 162 in his second and third matches, followed by a century against Delhi in the quarter-final. Elsewhere in the knockout rounds, Hoshedar Contractor, the son of former Indian captain Nari Contractor, made his only first-class appearance during the Bombay versus Orissa quarter-final match, where he recorded a score of zero.
