Ranji Trophy 1983–84

The 1983-84 Ranji Trophy marked the 50th edition of India's premier first-class cricket competition. A total of 24 teams competed in a tournament structured through league and knockout stages. Bombay continued its dominance in the domestic circuit by securing its 29th title after defeating Delhi in the final on the strength of a first-innings lead.

Sunil Gavaskar proved pivotal in the final, hitting a double century to help Bombay overcome the opposition. Dilip Vengsarkar also provided a remarkable display of consistency throughout the knockout rounds, recording centuries in the quarter-final, semi-final, and the final. Delhi, who won the toss in the final and chose to field, could not prevent Bombay from claiming the trophy.

Individual performances stood out during the season as well. Surinder Khanna from Delhi finished as the leading run-scorer with 685 runs. Meanwhile, Haryana's Rajinder Goel dominated the bowling charts, taking 48 wickets across the campaign. This included an impressive match performance of 5/7 and 5/18 against Jammu and Kashmir.

Other notable moments included Kiran More of Baroda hitting a career-best 181 not out against Uttar Pradesh in the quarter-final. During that same innings, he and Vasudev Patel combined for 145 runs, setting a record for the last-wicket partnership in the history of the competition.
