Ranji Trophy 1989–90

The 1989-90 Ranji Trophy marked the 56th season of the premier first-class cricket competition in India. Twenty-seven teams entered the league and knockout tournament, competing for the national title. The competition demanded sustained performance across multiple matches to survive the grueling group stages and earn a spot in the final rounds.

Bengal emerged as the champions, securing their second title in the history of the tournament. The final match against Delhi ended in a unique fashion, as rain disrupted the play throughout the encounter. With the match unfinished, officials determined the winner based on the run quotient rather than a traditional result.

Delhi won the toss in the final and elected to bat first. The match also carried significance for the future of Indian cricket, as Sourav Ganguly made his first-class debut for Bengal during this campaign.

Individual players stood out throughout the season with their contributions to the bat and ball. M. V. Sridhar from Hyderabad finished as the leading run-scorer with 729 runs. Meanwhile, Delhi bowler Atul Wassan proved difficult to face, claiming 39 wickets to top the bowling charts for the season.
