The 1898–99 Sheffield Shield season marked the seventh edition of Australia's premier first-class cricket competition. Three teams participated in the tournament, facing each other in a double round-robin format that spanned six matches throughout the season.
Victoria claimed the championship title, securing their fourth victory in the competition's history. The team finished at the top of the standings after a consistent performance across their matches against the other two participating states.
Individual players dominated key statistical categories during the season. Clem Hill of South Australia topped the batting charts, finishing the tournament with 502 runs. His performance highlighted the high level of individual competition present during the round-robin series.
Victorian bowler Hugh Trumble proved difficult for opponents to navigate, ending the season as the leading wicket-taker. He claimed a total of 34 wickets over the course of the six matches, a significant contribution to the championship result for Victoria.
