The thirty-fifth edition of the Sheffield Shield took place during the 1926-27 Australian cricket season. Four teams competed in the first-class tournament using a double round-robin format across eleven total matches. South Australia claimed the championship title, securing their fourth title overall and their first success since the 1912-13 season.
Victorian batsman Bill Ponsford dominated the batting statistics by scoring 1091 runs during the competition. Meanwhile, teammate Don Blackie led the bowling charts by taking 33 wickets for Victoria.
Victoria produced two of the most remarkable innings in first-class cricket history during the summer. In December 1926 at Melbourne, they posted the highest innings total ever recorded in first-class cricket by scoring 1107 runs against New South Wales. Just a month later in January 1927 at Sydney, the same Victorian batting lineup collapsed and was dismissed for a meager total of only 35 runs in the return match against New South Wales.
