Sheffield Shield 1939–40

The 1939–40 Sheffield Shield marked the 48th edition of the first-class competition in Australia. Four teams participated in the tournament, playing a total of 12 matches under a double round-robin format.

New South Wales finished as the champions, securing the 22nd title in the history of the state team. Their campaign relied on strong performances throughout the schedule.

Individual success reached high marks during the season. Don Bradman, playing for South Australia, recorded 1062 runs to lead the tournament in scoring.

Bill O'Reilly proved equally effective for New South Wales. He claimed 52 wickets across the matches to finish as the leading wicket-taker for the season.
