Sheffield Shield 1954–55

The 1954–55 Sheffield Shield represented the 63rd edition of the Australian first-class cricket competition. Five teams participated in the tournament, which followed a round-robin format. Officials scheduled nine matches in total throughout the season to compete for the domestic title.

Financial concerns heavily influenced the structure of the competition during this period. Organizers reduced the number of matches played in an attempt to limit monetary losses. This approach did not achieve the desired stability and was later viewed as a false economy for the state associations involved.

New South Wales emerged as the champions at the end of the season. This victory secured the 27th title in the history of the side. Their performance throughout the round-robin schedule proved enough to hold off the competition from the other four participating states.

Individual players stood out during the brief schedule. Neil Harvey of Victoria led the batting charts, finishing the tournament with 401 runs. Pat Crawford of New South Wales dominated the bowling, taking a total of 25 wickets across the matches played.
