Sheffield Shield 1977–78

The eighty-sixth edition of the Sheffield Shield took place during the 1977 to 1978 Australian summer. Six teams contested the first-class cricket competition across twenty-five matches. The tournament used a double round-robin format.

Western Australia claimed the championship title, marking the seventh time the state won the competition. Tasmania also competed in the tournament for the first time.

Queensland batsman David Ogilvie dominated the batting statistics, scoring 1060 runs. That performance earned him both the most runs award and the player of the series accolade. Meanwhile, New South Wales bowler David Hourn took the most wickets in the tournament with forty-eight dismissals.
