The eighty-seventh edition of the Sheffield Shield took place during the 1978 to 1979 Australian summer as a first-class cricket competition. Six teams played twenty-five matches across a double round-robin format.
Victoria claimed the championship title, marking the twenty-third time the state won the competition.
Individual players still managed standout performances despite the team outcome. Andrew Hilditch of New South Wales led the run-scoring charts with 778 runs. David Hourn, also representing New South Wales, took forty wickets to finish as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament. South Australia's Peter Sleep earned the player of the series award.
