The 1984–85 Sheffield Shield was the 93rd edition of the Australian first-class domestic cricket competition. Six teams competed across the season in a structure that featured a double round-robin stage followed by a final. Over the course of 31 matches, the players vied for the title in the premier domestic tournament.
New South Wales claimed the championship, marking the 38th time the state had secured the title. Their campaign was anchored by Peter Clifford, who led the tournament in scoring with 889 runs throughout the season.
The bowling honours were shared at the top of the leaderboard. Both John Inverarity of Western Australia and Carl Rackemann of Queensland finished the season with 41 wickets each. Tasmanian player David Boon received recognition as the player of the series for his performance.
During the final match, Queensland won the toss and elected to bat. The fixture also saw Jeff Thomson of Queensland reach a significant milestone by claiming his 600th wicket in first-class cricket.
