Sheffield Shield 1990–91

The ninety-ninth edition of the Sheffield Shield ran as a first-class cricket competition across Australia during the 1990-91 season. Six teams played thirty-one matches across a double round-robin format that concluded with a final. Queensland batsman Stuart Law dominated the batting charts by scoring 1082 runs, earning the player of the series award along the way. Victoria bowler Paul Reiffel claimed the most wickets in the competition with forty-nine dismissals.

Victoria claimed the championship title for the twenty-fifth time in their history after defeating New South Wales in the final at the MCG. Both squads missing several players touring the West Indies with the Australian team, New South Wales needed an outright victory and batted first after losing the toss. Damien Fleming took four for fifty-three and Tony Dodemaide took three for sixty-nine to dismiss New South Wales for 223.

Wayne Holdsworth took five for fifty-five as New South Wales bowled Victoria out for just 119 in reply. New South Wales reached fifty without loss in their second innings before Dodemaide claimed five for twenty-five to bundle them out for 193. Chasing a target of 239, Victoria recovered from two down for twenty-seven thanks to a partnership between Wayne Phillips, who made 91, and Jamie Siddons, who scored 124 to secure an eight-wicket victory.

Simon O'Donnell described the match as the hardest game of cricket he ever played in. The victory marked Victoria's first Sheffield Shield title since the 1979-80 season. Paul Jackson played in this victorious Victoria side before later winning the 1994-95 Sheffield Shield final with Queensland.
