Abongile Sodumo grew up in King Williams Town, Cape Province, where he was born on 16 June 1982. Before stepping onto the field as an official, he established himself as a first-class cricketer in South Africa. He played primarily as a right-handed wicket-keeper batsman during his time as a player.
Sodumo transitioned from his playing days into a career as a cricket umpire. His international officiating work includes overseeing a single One Day International match. He has also stood as an umpire for one T20 International.
His responsibilities extend to the women's game as well. In 2023, he stood as an umpire for one Women's One Day International. During that same year, he officiated a single Women's T20 International.
