Arthur Aldersley spent over 25 years as a central figure in New Zealand cricket. Born in Keighley, Yorkshire, in 1888, his family moved to New Zealand while he was still a child. He grew up in Wellington and attended Mount Cook School. His connection to the local game ran deep, as he became a founding member of the Lower Hutt Cricket Club. This long-standing commitment saw him play for the side for more than a quarter of a century.
During his playing days, Aldersley was recognized as one of the premier all-rounders in his region. He possessed a versatile skill set that made him a constant threat on the field. Observers described him as a high-quality batsman and a clever slow spin bowler. His ability to contribute in all facets of the game was rounded out by his work as a useful fielder. Beyond his technical skills, he was known throughout the cricket community for having a most likeable personality.
His talent at the club level led to opportunities in first-class cricket representing Wellington. He made six appearances for the provincial side over a span of thirteen years, beginning in the 1909-10 season. His involvement with the team continued through the early 1920s, with his final first-class match coming in the 1922-23 season. He remained a dedicated member of the sporting community in Lower Hutt until his death in 1981 at the age of 92.
