Cameron Wilberforce Smith was born on 29 July 1933 on Upper Dayrells Road in St Michael, Barbados, and attended Harrison College in Bridgetown. He played as a right-handed batsman and represented the West Indies in five Test matches between December 1960 and February 1962. Across his first-class career for Barbados spanning from 1951 to 1963, he scored 222 runs in his Tests with a top score of 55, while taking four catches and a stumping.
At the age of 18, Smith made 80 runs on his first-class debut while batting at number three for Barbados against British Guiana in the 1951 to 1952 season. In his very next match against Jamaica, he scored 140 runs and shared a 243-run partnership for the second wicket with Conrad Hunte to secure an innings victory.
Smith featured regularly for Barbados throughout the 1950s as either an opener or a number three batsman. He recorded 116 runs against Jamaica in 1958 during a match where he also took on wicketkeeping duties and claimed six catches.
