Donald Ernest Cameron McKechnie, born in Dunedin in 1944, navigated a dual role in New Zealand cricket as both a player and an official. His playing days were spent with Otago, where he featured in 17 first-class matches between the 1975/76 and 1980/81 seasons.
As a right-handed batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, McKechnie contributed 278 runs across his career with a top score of 49 not out. He maintained a batting average of 11.12 without reaching a half-century, but his impact was often felt more keenly with the ball. He delivered 2,408 balls in total, claiming 37 wickets at an average of 24.35.
His most effective performance arrived during the 1975/76 season against Auckland. In that contest, he secured his best bowling figures of 6/65, helping Otago clinch a narrow 10-run victory. He also demonstrated versatility in the field, recording 13 catches throughout his time in the first-class game.
The 1976/77 season saw him earn player of the match honours during a tight encounter against Wellington. He played a decisive role by taking six wickets and three catches, while also proving his value with the bat by top-scoring for Otago in their first innings with 27 runs while batting at number nine. McKechnie died in Balclutha on 10 August 2021 at the age of 77.
