Michael Wayne Graham-Smith was born in Burnie, Tasmania, on 5 August 1969. Before standing in international cricket fixtures, he worked away from the pitch teaching mathematics at Elizabeth College in Hobart.
His domestic umpiring career began on 4 October 2013 during the Ryobi One-Day Cup. He later moved into international matches, officiating in his first Twenty20 International between Indonesia and South Korea on 15 October 2022.
Across his career at the international level, Graham-Smith has stood in 1 Test match, 7 One Day Internationals, and 4 Twenty20 Internationals in the men's game. He has also officiated in 1 women's Test match, 7 women's One Day Internationals, and 4 women's Twenty20 Internationals.
