Shawn Andrew Jacob Craig was born in Carlton, Victoria, on 23 June 1973. Before moving into officiating, he played domestic cricket for Victoria as a left-handed batsman and leg spin bowler. He graduated from the Australian Cricket Academy and debuted for Victoria in a List A match against Western Australia on 23 February 1997, followed by a first-class debut against South Australia on 7 March 1997.
During his playing days across 20 matches for Victoria from 1997 to 2001, Craig scored 936 runs at an average of 31.20. He hit one century and four fifties, recording a top score of 128 not out. With the ball, he bowled 1007 balls, took 8 wickets at an average of 83.00, and claimed a best bowling figure of 2/89. He also took 20 catches.
After his state career ended, Craig played club cricket as an all-rounder and opened the batting for the St Kilda Cricket Club in Victorian Premier Cricket. He later joined the Cricket Australia Project Panel and began officiating matches at First Grade level in Victorian Premier Cricket.
On the international stage, Craig made his umpiring debut in 2014. His career includes standing in 11 men's One Day Internationals, 16 men's T20 Internationals between 2019 and 2025, 11 Women's One Day Internationals between 2014 and 2026, and 11 Women's T20 Internationals between 2014 and 2023.
