This oval opened in 1856 and underwent a major renovation between 2015 and 2018. It has staged key Sheffield Shield matches in recent years. Victoria defeated New South Wales by 23 runs here in 2018, and a 2021 clash between Victoria and South Australia ended in a draw.

International women's cricket has a long history on this turf. The ground hosted its first women's Test match back in 1958 when Australia played England. More recently, the venue staged a women's One Day International between Australia and England in January 2025.
