Cricket has been played on this ground from 1979 to 2026 across a wide variety of domestic and international competitions. Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club made this site its home in 1841, and the England cricket team has played fixtures here since 1899.

The ground has staged numerous high-profile international encounters across multiple formats. The first men's Test match took place between England and Australia from the first to the third of June 1899. Decades later, the venue hosted the first men's Twenty20 International involving Bangladesh and India on the sixth of June 2009.

Women's cricket also has a deep history at the ground. The first women's Test match was played here between England and the West Indies from the twenty-third to the twenty-fifth of June 1979. More recently, the women's T20I schedule brought England and India together on the twenty-eighth of June 2025.

Notts County Football Club used the ground as a home venue during two distinct eras, spanning from 1873 to 1877 and again from 1894 to 1910, before the site settled into its modern identity as a dedicated cricket arena.
