Wankhede Stadium functions as the home ground for the Mumbai Cricket Team and the Mumbai Indians. The India national team and India women's national cricket team also play matches at this venue. Since its opening in 1974, the stadium has been a primary site for domestic and international cricket, serving as a base for various competitions including the Ranji Trophy and the Indian Premier League.

The ground first hosted a men's Test match between India and the West Indies in January 1975. This was followed by a women's Test match against Australia in February 1984. Over the following decades, the stadium facilitated various international fixtures across all three formats. The last men's Test match occurred in November 2024 between India and New Zealand, while the women's Test schedule concluded in December 2023.

International limited-overs cricket remains frequent at the ground. The first men's ODI took place in 1987 between India and Sri Lanka, whereas the most recent men's ODI was in November 2023. T20 international cricket has been played here since 2012 for men and 2016 for women. The most recent men's T20I match held at the stadium was between the West Indies and Zimbabwe in February 2026.

The stadium has undergone capacity changes during its tenure. Between 1974 and 2010, the ground held 39,000 spectators. Following changes in 2011, the capacity adjusted to 33,100, which remains the current limit. This reduction in capacity has not stopped the venue from hosting major events, including matches for the Cricket World Cup, World Twenty20, and the ICC Women's Championship across various tournament cycles.

Recent matches in 2026 demonstrate the competitive environment for the Mumbai Indians. During this period, the team faced several outcomes against visiting opponents. While they secured a 6-wicket victory against the Lucknow Super Giants, other matches ended in defeat.
