Tamim Iqbal, who last played a professional match in May during the Dhaka Premier League, is gearing up for a comeback after a six-month break. His current focus is the upcoming BPL tournament.
For the past two days, the former national team captain has been training at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. Today, he worked on his fitness and also practiced batting indoors at the stadium.
Last month, Tamim took on a commentary role during Bangladesh’s tour of India. While in the press box at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, he mentioned his intention to return to competitive play through the BPL.
The left-handed opener will once again play for Fortune Barishal, the reigning champions. However, fans may see Tamim back on the field even before the BPL, which kicks off on December 30.
As soon as the current four-day National Cricket League ends, the National League T20 tournament will start, and Tamim is likely to play for Chattogram Division in this tournament. The team manager, Rezaul Karim, told Prothom Alo, “We have included his name in the player list, and there’s a good chance he will play. We should know for sure in a few days.”
Tamim last played international cricket in September of the previous year. He appeared in the first two matches of a three-match ODI series against New Zealand at Mirpur. His last Test match was in April of the same year against Ireland. Having retired from T20s, Tamim last played in the shorter format back in 2020 against Zimbabwe.
