At the end of the second day’s play in the Cape Town Test, Pakistan found themselves 551 runs behind South Africa with six wickets remaining.

In a closely contested encounter last season, Barbastro fought hard against Barcelona. However, this time, despite a recent slump, Barcelona easily defeated them in dominant fashion. With their expected victory, Barcelona secured a spot in the Copa del Rey Round of 16.

South Africa’s innings saw Ryan Rickelton and Kyle Verreynne shine with remarkable contributions, Rickelton scoring his first double-century and Verreynne hitting a century. Marco Jansen also added a crucial fifty to their total, allowing the hosts to set an impressive score.

Pakistan, in reply, faced early setbacks, losing three quick wickets. By the end of the day’s play, their score was 64/3 with Babar Azam (31*) and Mohammad Rizwan (9*) at the crease. With Saima Ayub ruled out due to injury, this match marks a significant challenge for Pakistan, who now face a daunting task.

Starting the day with 316/4, South Africa added 299 more runs, with Rickelton and Verreynne forming a century partnership. Verreynne’s century came to an end, but Rickelton carried on, playing a mammoth 259-run innings, the second-highest score in Newlands history.

After quick dismissals of Verreynne and Jansen, South Africa continued to score heavily, with Keshav Maharaj hitting 40 runs in just 35 balls. Pakistan’s bowlers struggled, with all main bowlers conceding significant runs.

With Rizwan’s six catches behind the stumps, the visitors were left to chase a steep target in their second innings. South Africa ended their first innings at 615 runs, and Pakistan’s response so far has been disappointing.

Summary of Scores:

  • South Africa 1st Innings: 615 all out (259 by Rickelton, 100 by Verreynne, 62 by Jansen, 40 by Maharaj)
  • Pakistan 1st Innings: 64/3 (Babar 31*, Rizwan 9*, Masood 2, Shakil 0)
