Bangladesh U-19 Women’s Team Win Despite Batting Woes

In the opening match of the Women’s U-19 World Cup, Bangladesh struggled with the bat, losing five wickets while chasing a modest target of 53 runs.

Known for their bowling strength but struggling with batting inconsistency, Bangladesh’s recurring issues were evident once again, even as they began the tournament with a win.

Facing Nepal, Bangladesh secured a 5-wicket victory in Malaysia on Saturday.

After losing the toss, Nepal batted first, with opener Sana Pravin holding one end for a while. However, wickets kept falling regularly at the other end. Eventually, Sana was dismissed for 19 off 32 balls, the highest score for Nepal. Only Simana KC (10) managed to join her in reaching double figures.

Bangladesh’s bowling unit worked cohesively, with Jannatul Mawa taking two wickets. Still, the real damage came from Nepal’s poor running between the wickets, leading to five run-outs.

Nepal’s innings featured only three boundaries, as they were bowled out for 52 runs in 18.2 overs.

In the chase, Bangladesh faced early trouble, losing their first three wickets for just 11 runs. Sadia Islam and captain Sumaiya Akter steadied the innings briefly but couldn’t finish the job. Afia Islam Ira and Jannatul Mawa eventually guided the team to victory, scoring the remaining runs to secure a 5-wicket win in 13.2 overs.

In the other group match, Australia comfortably defeated Scotland by 9 wickets. Bangladesh will face Australia next on Monday.

Match Summary:

Nepal U-19: 52 all out in 18.2 overs (Sana 19, Simana 10; Jannatul 2/11, Nishita 1/13, Chhoya 1/7).
Bangladesh U-19: 53/5 in 13.2 overs (Sadia 16, Sumaiya 12, Afia 9*; Rachana 1/16, Simana 1/10).

Result: Bangladesh U-19 won by 5 wickets.
Player of the Match: Jannatul Mawa.
