It was never going to be easy for South Africa to crash out. The only way they could have been eliminated before the semifinals was if they batted second today and lost to England by at least 207 runs. In that case, Afghanistan would have taken their place as the second semifinalist from Group B.
However, South Africa took control of their fate in Karachi. After winning the toss, England opted to bat first but was bowled out for just 179 runs. This ensured South Africa’s place in the semifinals before even coming out to bat.
Now, if they successfully chase 180 runs and win, they will finish as Group B champions, surpassing Australia. Even if rain prevents a result, South Africa will still top the group. However, a loss would mean they qualify as runners-up and will face the Group A winners in the semifinals.
Who Will Be South Africa’s Semifinal Opponent?
South Africa’s semifinal opponent will be determined by tomorrow’s India vs. New Zealand clash. If India wins, South Africa will have to travel to Dubai for their semifinal. But if New Zealand emerges victorious, the semifinal will take place in Lahore, Pakistan.
Concerns for South Africa Despite Semifinal Berth
Even though they have secured a semifinal spot, South Africa has some concerns. Regular captain Temba Bavuma missed the match due to illness, and stand-in skipper Aiden Markram had to leave the field with a hamstring issue. As a result, Heinrich Klaasen took over the captaincy for the remainder of England’s innings.
South Africa’s Bowlers Shine
Every South African bowler played a part in England’s collapse. Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder were the standout performers, picking up three wickets each. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj grabbed two, while fast bowlers Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada took one wicket each.
Jansen set the tone early, taking three wickets in his first four overs, reducing England to 37/3. Joe Root and Harry Brook then rebuilt the innings, taking the score to 99 before Maharaj dismissed Brook for 19. That triggered another collapse, and England was bundled out for 179. Root was England’s top scorer with 37 runs.
Now, all eyes are on South Africa’s chase. A win will put them in prime position heading into the semifinals.
