South Africa faces a major concern ahead of their Champions Trophy semi-final clash against New Zealand, as key player Aiden Markram struggles with a hamstring injury. His availability for the crucial match remains uncertain, casting a shadow over the team’s preparations.
During South Africa’s final group-stage match against England, Markram sustained the injury while fielding and was unable to continue. His fitness will be assessed in Tuesday’s training session to determine if he can play against the Kiwis in Lahore on Wednesday.
As a precaution, South Africa has added left-arm spinning all-rounder George Linde to the squad as a backup. However, Linde can only officially replace Markram in the squad if the ICC’s technical committee grants approval.
South Africa has already suffered multiple injury setbacks in this tournament, losing fast bowlers Anrich Nortje, Gerald Coetzee, Nandre Burger, and Lizaad Williams before the event. Now, the potential absence of an experienced batter like Markram adds to their concerns.
Linde, 33, will join the squad on Tuesday. His inclusion also suggests that South Africa is preparing for the possibility of playing on spin-friendly surfaces, particularly if India beats Australia and the final is played in Dubai. The Proteas currently have two specialist spinners in their squad—left-arm orthodox bowler Keshav Maharaj and left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi—though only Maharaj has featured in the tournament so far.
Linde arrives in excellent form. In the recent SA20 tournament, he played a key role in MI Cape Town’s title win, scoring 161 runs at a strike rate of 153.33 and taking 11 wickets at an economy of 6.29. He also performed well in the One Day Challenge Division One, scoring 106 runs and picking up four wickets in five matches for Western Province.
South Africa has another backup option in left-arm fast bowler Kwena Maphaka, who is traveling with the squad. On a positive note, captain Temba Bavuma and opener Tony de Zorzi have recovered from illness, providing a boost to the team ahead of the semi-final.
