Harry Brook will officially begin his journey as England’s captain at the end of May.

Rumors had been circulating for some time, and now it’s official. Harry Brook has been appointed as England’s captain for both One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20Is.

After England’s disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy, Jos Buttler stepped down as captain for white-ball cricket. Brook now replaces the wicketkeeper-batsman in this role.

The 26-year-old Brook had been England’s vice-captain in limited-overs cricket for the past year. In September, during Buttler’s absence, he captained England in five ODIs against Australia. England lost the series 3-2.

Brook’s formal captaincy will begin in late May when England faces the West Indies in three ODIs and three T20Is.

Brook is thrilled to receive the national team leadership.

“It’s truly an honor to be given the responsibility as England’s captain for white-ball cricket. From playing cricket in Warfield’s Barley as a child, representing Yorkshire, dreaming of one day playing for England, and perhaps even leading the national team, this opportunity is a huge achievement for me,” Brook said.

Since his debut in 2022, Brook has become a key member of the England team across all formats. He has been exceptional in Tests, with a stunning 317-run innings against Pakistan. He is ranked second in the ICC Test batsmen rankings.

In 2018, Brook captained England in the Under-19 World Cup and also led Northern Superchargers in The Hundred. These experiences made him a strong candidate for the role of England’s next captain.

There had been rumors that England might appoint separate captains for the two white-ball formats, with Test captain Ben Stokes possibly being given the ODI captaincy. However, in the end, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has put its faith in Brook for both formats.

Brook has played 26 ODIs so far, scoring 816 runs with 1 century and 5 fifties, boasting a strike rate of 100.74 and an average of 34. In 44 T20Is, he has scored 798 runs, including 4 fifties, with a strike rate of 146.15 and an average of 28.50.
