It was truly a case of “adding insult to injury” for Mumbai Indians. Not only did they suffer the heartbreak of a loss, but the entire team was slapped with fines as well. Last night couldn’t have gone worse for the franchise.

Due to a slow over-rate, the whole Mumbai Indians squad has been penalized—with captain Hardik Pandya fined the most. On the other hand, Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has also been fined and handed a demerit point for misconduct during the game.

In a rain-affected clash at Wankhede Stadium, Gujarat edged out Mumbai by 3 wickets via the Duckworth-Lewis method. Rain delays pushed the match late into the night, and to make matters worse, Mumbai failed to complete their bowling innings within the allotted time—leading to punishment for the entire team.

In a statement, the IPL said, “This was Mumbai’s second offense of slow over-rate this season. As a result, captain Hardik Pandya has been fined INR 24 lakh.”

And that’s not all. All other Mumbai players, including impact players and concussion substitutes, will be fined either INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees—whichever is lower.

Ashish Nehra, meanwhile, was visibly frustrated multiple times during the rain delays. He got into heated discussions with the on-field umpires—a clear breach of IPL’s Code of Conduct under Article 2.20, which deals with actions contrary to the spirit of the game.

According to the IPL statement, “Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra has been fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point.”

Nehra accepted the match referee’s decision, so no formal hearing was required.
