Shukri Conrad has now been appointed as South Africa’s head coach for both ODIs and T20Is, in addition to his existing role with the Test team.
For the first time in over two years, South Africa has returned to having a single head coach across all three formats. Conrad, who was already in charge of the red-ball side, will now also lead the team in white-ball cricket.
Initially appointed in February 2023 on a four-year deal as the Proteas’ Test coach, Conrad took over while Cricket South Africa (CSA) chose Rob Walter to lead the ODI and T20I squads.
However, last month, Walter stepped down from his position voluntarily. Rather than appointing someone new, CSA decided to hand Conrad full responsibility across all formats until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
This marks the first time since August 2022 that the Proteas will have a single, full-time coach for all formats. The last to serve in that capacity was Mark Boucher, who stepped down, after which the role was handled through interim appointments.
Conrad’s first coaching assignment at the international level was with South Africa itself. A highly experienced figure in domestic cricket, he has overseen a strong run of form in the Test arena—most notably guiding the team to seven consecutive Test wins and securing a place in the final of the ongoing World Test Championship.
Despite giving him control of all three teams, CSA has slightly scaled back Conrad’s authority. Until now, the head coach had complete control over team selection. Going forward, Conrad will work alongside a lead selector in the selection process.
CSA recently advertised the selector role, with applications accepted until April 29. The submitted candidates are now being reviewed, and an announcement on the new lead selector is expected soon.
