Sehwag again says Kohli could have played tests for 2 more years
Virender Sehwag has once again expressed that Virat Kohli could have easily continued playing Test cricket for at least two more years.
Watching Kohli bat in the IPL continues to stir regret in Sehwag’s heart. Though the format may be different, the energy remains the same — and that’s why Sehwag finds it hard to accept Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket.
Just a few days ago, Sehwag had said the same thing — Kohli could have played red-ball cricket for another couple of years. Now, he’s repeated that sentiment.
On Friday in the IPL, Kohli gave Royal Challengers Bengaluru a solid start in their chase against the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s massive total. In top form, as he has been throughout this season, Kohli scored 43 off 25 balls.
That innings brought back the same old feeling for Sehwag — the sting of Kohli’s retirement from Tests. Speaking on Cricbuzz, the former opener voiced his thoughts:
“Of course I think he quit Test cricket too early. He could’ve easily played for another two years, the way he maintains his fitness. But only Virat Kohli himself can explain the reason behind his decision. These are personal choices, dependent on how the player feels — whether he’s mentally or physically exhausted.”
“If you ask me,” he added, “with the way he’s playing in the IPL and the energy he’s showing, I’ll say it again — he could’ve easily played for two more years.”
India is set to tour England next month for a five-match Test series. Despite not being in top Test form recently, Kohli’s experience would have made him a pillar in India’s batting lineup. But just a few days ago, he shocked fans and experts alike by announcing his retirement from Test cricket.
